The role of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for military, research and commercial applications is growing rapidly, along with the range of AUV-fitted sensors.
Perhaps the most successful AUV in the world is Hydroid's REMUS-100, a small, 19 cm diameter, 100 m depth-rated vehicle with over 150 units deployed to date.
SEA has been working with Hydroid to develop the SWATHplus-RS100 bathymetric sonar, designed specifically for the REMUS-100, and providing the AUV with a wide swath bathymetry capability. The SWATHplus-RS100 fits as a short section of the AUV (< 40 cm length) and will be available on new vehicles and for upgrades to existing vehicles. The system operates at 468 kHz, as for our current ship-based SWATHplus-H, providing high accuracy bathymetric survey with co-located sidescan over excellent swath-width to depth ratios.
The system is undergoing sea trials and will be showcased on SEA's and Hydroid's stands at Oceanology International 2008 at Excel, London.
