Online health advise for Technip offshore employees

Posted on 05.03.2008 - 08:00 EST in GENERAL NEWS by Rons_ROV_Links

Online health advise for Technip offshore employeesOffshore workers are getting tailor-made advice on how to look after themselves in a new computerised programme developed by occupational health specialists in Aberdeen.

Employees of Technip are taking part in trials of the Healthy Offshore Working Lives system - an online database created by Abermed.

It allows medics to input information about the health of individual workers.

This can then be compiled into anonymous statistics and used by the firm's health promotion team to focus on issues that are relevant to its own workforce, rather than general health advice. The information can be stored according to location, vessel and type of occupation, to allow employers to respond to trends and patterns.

Health checks are offered on a voluntary basis and carried out by an onboard medic who monitors height, weight and blood pressure.

The employee is then given their own booklet with a record of their statistics and personalised tips on issues such as stopping smoking, eating healthily or losing weight.

Technip's fleet of vessels, which carry out subsea installation, construction and diving activities, employ more than 1,200 people around the world, most of them male.

It is well documented that men often find it more difficult to discuss their health and it is hoped this system will help to address fears.

Abermed director Dr Euan Thompson said the initial work with Technip had been extremely positive.
