Submarine cables for the nation's first regional cabled ocean observatory made landfall last week on the Oregon coast. The cables eventually will provide power, transmit instructions and carry data back to scientists and the public from instruments installed across miles of seafloor and in the ocean. Natural phenomena that occur throughout the world's oceans will be studied, according to UW oceanography professor John Delaney, director and principal investigator of the regional scale nodes project, one part of the U.S. Ocean Observatories Initiative.
Cyta announces the agreement for the commercial operation of the Cyprus-Egypt segment of its private submarine cable subsystem ALEXANDROS. Following the successful activation of the Cyprus-France segment in August 2010, the Cyprus-Egypt segment is planned to be activated during summer 2011, complementing available capacity and connectivity in the Mediterranean, ahead of other competing submarine systems passing through Egypt. Furthermore, the landing in Egypt provides the opportunity to transport Cyta traffic to key European and Asian destinations and cost-effectively reach regional markets accessible via Egypt.
The high-voltage submarine cable market is, by all definitions, a niche market with few purchasers and even fewer manufacturers and installers. The demand for these products is rapidly moving beyond the traditional role slotted for high-voltage submarine cables, connecting islands to nearby national grids. The usage of high-voltage submarine cables for grid interconnections and connecting offshore wind farms to nearby landmasses is on the rise and, according to a new report from Pike Research, submarine transmission cable projects will increase from just over 60 worldwide in 2011 to more than 350 cables by 2020, placing significant pressure on the existing industry supply chain.

A new electricity transmission connection between Finland and Sweden, Fenno-Skan 2, will be commissioned at the end of this year. The laying of the subsea cable for this interconnector is currently underway outside Rihtniemi in Finland. The new high-voltage direct current transmission connection will reinforce the Nordic electricity market and the system security of the transmission grid.
