Four Killed, Several Injured in Pemex Platform Fire in Gulf of Mexico – Update

Update 2 (1:50 p.m. EDT): Pemex has now confirmed four fatalities from today’s explosion and fire at a Pemex platform in the Bay of Campeche.

Update 1: Pemex has reported that 1 fatality has now been confirmed. The worker killed was a contractor from the company Cotemar, an oil services company based in Mexico. Pemex reported that it has received reports of 16 injured, including two with serious injuries.

New safety rules for offshore Arctic drilling proposed to avoid repeat of Shell

US officials want to make sure companies can handle a blow-out in remote and icy conditions – without inflicting an environmental disaster.

The Obama administration proposed new rules for Arctic oil drilling on Friday in an attempt to avoid repeating Shell’s disastrous foray into extreme waters.

 

The proposals, shaped by the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and the grounding of Shell’s drill ship in the Arctic two years later, are aimed at making sure companies could handle a blow-out in remote and icy conditions – without inflicting an environmental disaster on the pristine seas.

DNV GL Issues Guide for Subsea Lifting Ops

 The completion of a joint industry project (JIP) to improve existing standards and regulations around subsea lifting operations has resulted in a new recommended practice (RP).

 
The recommended practice developed by DNV GL provides guidance on the proper design and correct operation, as well as regular inspection and maintenance, of subsea cranes and lifting appliances. The aim is to reduce the overall risk and safeguard personnel during lifting operations and to improve the integrity and efficiency of equipment throughout its lifetime.

New Online Safety Tool Could Be Rolled Out Across North Sea Operators

 North Sea operator EnQuest has launched a new incident management tool aimed at improving safety on the UK continental shelf.

 

The system, which combines software by DNV GL and Kelvin Top-Set, was designed to make it easier for offshore workers to investigate and report incidents.

Super Puma helicopter flights to resume after Shetland crash

  A meeting of industry representatives has recommended that Super Puma helicopters should be cleared to fly.

 All offshore flights by the Super Puma had been suspended following the crash off Shetland last week which killed four oil workers.
 The Helicopter Safety Steering Group (HSSG) said a campaign would be started to engage with the offshore workforce.
 Earlier the missing flight data recorder of the crashed helicopter was recovered.

Shetland Helicopter Crash: RMT Raises Safety Concerns

 The helicopter crash off Shetland which claimed the lives of four people has once again raised safety concerns.

 

The RMT union said it anticipated "an outpouring of anger", following the fifth major North Sea incident involving a Super Puma since 2009.

 

On Saturday, a helicopter safety group recommended all Super Puma UK offshore commercial passenger flights be temporarily suspended.

Shetland helicopter crash: Four dead named

 Four people who died after a helicopter crash off Shetland have been named.

 

They were Duncan Munro, 46, from Bishop Auckland, Sarah Darnley, 45, from Elgin, Gary McCrossan, 59, from Inverness, and George Allison, 57, from Winchester.

  Oil & Gas UK has welcomed the announcement that a plenary vote in the European Parliament will see the introduction of a directive on offshore safety and environment.
