Chevron has made a gas discovery in the Carnarvon hydrocarbon basin, off Western Australia's north-west coast.

Located in the WA-392-P permit area, 95km northwest of Barrow Island, the Isosceles-1 exploration well encountered 134m of net gas pay in the Triassic Mungaroo Sands, in 968m of water.

Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production Company president Melody Meyer said: "This discovery is a continuation of our exploration success, and further positions our company as a key supplier for future liquefied natural gas (LNG) demand in the Asia-Pacific region."

The WA-392-P permit is being operated by Chevron Australia with a 50% stake. Shell Australia and Mobil Australia Resources each hold a 25% interest.

Chevron has been operating in Australia for more than 60 years, and is leading the development of the Gorgon and Wheatstone natural gas projects.

The Gorgon project includes the development of the Gorgon and Jansz-Io gas fields, located within the Greater Gorgon area, between 130km and 220km off the northwest coast of Western Australia.

It includes the construction of a 15.6 million tonne per annum (MTPA) liquefied natural gas plant on Barrow Island, and a domestic gas plant with the capacity to supply 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia.

The Wheatstone project will feature an onshore facility located at Ashburton North strategic industrial area, 12km west of Onslow in Western Australia's Pilbara region.

The foundation project includes two LNG trains with a combined capacity of 8.9MTPA, and a domestic gas plant.
