Ormen Lange Field to use KONGSBERG transponders
Date: Thursday, May 06, 2004 @ 03:19:29 EDT

HomeWe have signed an agreement with Hydro to deliver seabed reference transponders for the Ormen Lange oil field in the North Sea. The transponders will be installed as seabed references throughout the entire field; from the very complex near shore area, out over the plateau, the landslide edge, through the tough ridge topography landscape and into the deepwater area where the templates are to be installed.

All construction and survey vessels working with the project will utilise the transponders, which will comply with Kongsberg’s High Precision Acoustic Positioning (HiPAP) systems on Super Short and Long Base Line principles. The Ormen Lange field will be developed by Hydro with seabed installations at depths of between 800 m and 1100 m, and will be linked to a processing plant on land at Nyhamna in the Aukra municipality, from where the gas will be exported.

When it reaches full production, the field will meet 20 percent of the UK’s demand for gas. Hydro’s subsea solutions are taking technological developments on the Norwegian continental shelf significant steps forward. The Ormen Lange gas field will not be visible on the surface when it comes on stream in 2007, and Kongsberg Maritime’s acoustics systems will have helped to provide the construction teams with the full picture in the darkness below during the building of this massive project.
