Got to thinking… there’s a vast wealth of knowledge out there in either folks craniums or electronically

The gimme, gimme attitude is all around…. I’ve spent over 20 years collecting data and it seems, like the past 5 years or so people have come on this website, browse for a few minutes, get bored of trying to do some research and end up asking for data / info. It gets over-redundant…. It’s akin to "How do I get a job in the ROV industry questions"

So…. instead of having to read the requests of obvious slackers, why not avoid the hassel and get a shared library going? Then people like meself won’t get annoyed or upset and the slackers will have their info without making themselves look like slackers. Sounds like a win-win to me!!!

Mind you, there are some bona fide non-slackers there who may need some hard-to-find info as well. And for any slackers who end up browsing a library on THEIR OWN TIME – well, I guess you’re not slackers after all…

Biggest problem would be any breach of copyrite issues. Even if manufacturers have the software/info freely available on THEIR website would not mean it could be freely distributed through another.

There would be nothing wrong with links taking you directly to the info on their site though.

I know we are all used to ripping all sorts of stuff and "ROV training videos" whilst offshore, but its different to making it available on a public website.

I feel the copywrite issue can only be seen as a doubt rather than a physical block. Looks at the news for example. We don’t make it up.. it comes from other websites and, often, they get it from other sites themselves. It doesn’t make it legal but there is a certain level of acceptance, especially if no money is being made from it and you name the source.

I have done this kind of thing before on a motorcycle website I ran. Not once did we get any comeback. It needs to go a long way down the line before copy-write problems become actual legal action, especially if you are not claiming the file to be your own. We could even go as far as adding a link back to the originators main url to suggest that the user checks for an update if they so wish. I say lets give it a bash… If I end up as a British citizen in a Portuguese jail for hosting a tech file on a server in the USA then we can have a rethink… it’s not like I wouldn’t have the time to mull over it at that point.

The problem with linking to the file directly on the manufacturers site is often they delete or rename or update files and the link breaks. Not so bad when you only have a few files but if the library grows that could become a real issue.

works for me. I found the insite stuff to be very useful and saved me lots of time over the last shift.
