    hi all,

apologies if this has been brought up before but i tried searching the site and couldnt find much.

I am starting all my ROV induction stuff next week and during that time i will be spending 3 weeks at fort william. Are there any gyms or personal training equipment available there. plus when on board vessels is there an onboard gym i have been led to believe there are on the oil rigs but havent been able to find out with regards to the vessels.

    any help much appreciated

    Kind regards

Many of the bigger boats have gyms. Some of the smaller boats have them also but sometimes lack facilities.

Can’t say about Fort Bill, but sure most vessels have some basic free weights and possiblty a bike.
I have resorted to peices of old iron many times when there hasn’t been any gym, and take a skipping rope, raises a few laughs 😆
On the old days of C & W boats you could lounge in the sauna after a workout with your personal trainer (YBFM) and then on to Gin club…oh the good ‘ole days 🙄

    Hi,

The forum has caught the reality nicely. Some platforms/vessels have good facilities, others have nothing.

On those with gyms, no problem, with those with nothing, if you are lucky you will have a helideck, otherwise a skipping rope, basic bodey-weight exercises and some piping on the deckhead for pull-ups will do. If you are into training, you will make a plan, if you are a body-builder or similar, you may want to cross your fingers you land up on something with a decent weight room and other goodies.

    Good luck with the induction.

As I recall, there’s a gym close by to Morrisons in FW that costs approx £30 per month. I didn’t use it myself though tbh.

Yep i’ve found the same, from multi treadmill gyms on rigs and good vessels with all the kit to lumps of iron on the back deck of old tugs. I make use of whats available and build a routine around that. A good substitute for free weights is the elastic band type gismos that pack into your bag and weigh nothing but so versitle you can work most muscle groups and use anywhere. so between that and a basic calestenic routine (push ups, sit ups etc) you’d be covered enough not to be waddling off these vessels when you finally see dry land after over eating and sitting on your ass for 12hrs a day.

I bought this from Amazon, it’s perfect for offshore life:

There’s also this one which isn’t as girlie as you may think:

I always take a skip rope but there’s not always space to use it. I carry climbers grip tools too. You can usually find beams for pull-ups, places for dips, step-ups etc

The books above are the best though.

    😉

You can also just take a brisk walk up Ben Nevis as Fort William is located just at the base of it, why pay for a gym 😀
