Posted on 10.02.2006 - 07:35 EST in SCIENCE & TECH NEWS by admin

Black Law Wind FarmThe Black Law windfarm in Lanarkshire, the largest operating windfarm in the UK with 42 turbines, was officially opened today.

Enterprise Minister Nicol Stephen said:

"With the potential to power a town the size of Paisley, Black Law is now the largest operating windfarm in the UK.

"This remarkable project has helped regenerate this landscape, transforming an old open-cast coal-mine into a development providing clean, renewable energy. It symbolises our determination to turn Scotland into a powerhouse of renewable energy.

"We have set the target that, by the end of this decade, 18 per cent of electricity generated in Scotland should be from renewable sources rising to 40 per cent by 2020.

"Along with a range of wave and tidal projects now in development, Black Law will make a significant contribution to meeting these ambitious targets."

ScottishPower made an application under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 during May 2002 for Scottish Ministers consent to construct and operate a windfarm at Black Law, near Forth, Lanarkshire. The proposal was approved on February 13, 2004.

The Black Law Windfarm currently consists of 42 turbines with a 97 MW capacity. It has been operational since July 2005 and plans to add a further 12 turbines to the site are being progressed.

It employs seven permanent staff on site and created 200 construction jobs during building.

The Executive has a target that 18 per cent of electricity generated in Scotland should come from renewable sources by 2010 and 40 per cent by 2020.
