Stork Technical Services Stork Technical Services, the leading global provider of knowledge-based asset integrity management services for the oil and gas, chemical and power sectors, received overwhelming support from the First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond MSP, and local North-East organisation’s for the company’s Charity Golf Day in aid of Pound for Piper Memorial Trust.

Stork recognised the significance of the 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster and decided to nominate Pound for Piper as its charity for the day, as part of the company’s increased charitable and community’s engagement activity. Hosted this year at Meldrum House Country Hotel and Golf Club on Friday 31 May, it saw industry members compete in teams to win the Stork Trophy. Throughout the day, various competitions such as nearest the pin and longest drive, took place. Prizes from a variety of Aberdeen/Shire businesses and The First Minister were also donated to be auctioned to raise funds for the commendable Charity, Pounder for Piper Memorial trust.

Erik-Jan Bijvank, SVP – UK & Africa, Stork Technical Services, said: “The industry's support for this event has been tremendous; it demonstrates how passionate the local community is about ensuring we remember the lives lost in the Piper Alpha disaster. Stork is fully committed to adding value to the communities in which we operate. By raising awareness of the Piper Alpha Disaster, Stork would like to remind people that Piper Alpha is something that should stay fresh in our minds and that we must all endeavour to continue to improve safety within the industry.”

Mr Bijvank, continued: “Stork is extremely proud to have hosted its Charity Golf Day; the incredible efforts of the Pound for Piper team mean that the much-loved and important memorial to Piper Alpha will thrive for many years to come. The total funds raised by the charitable event amounted to just over £4,500.00, which includes a sizable donation from Stork. I would like to thank all organisations who gave their time and efforts to help make this possible.”

The Pound for Piper Memorial Trust was established to raise £1million in order to restore the Memorial Garden at Hazlehead Park to its former glory and to retain its appeal long into the future; in remembrance of the 167 men who tragically lost their lives in the Piper Alpha Disaster.

Gus Munro, Trustee on the board of the Pound for Piper Memorial Trust, said: “Since Pound for Piper was founded, we have been overwhelmed by the support of the oil and gas community, and from the wider public as a whole, who have assisted the Trust greatly both financially and in spirit. We are extremely thankful for their generosity and are confident we can continue to work collectively to maintain the gardens to the standard that will allow an area dedicated to a restive and contemplative atmosphere. It is truly important that the victims of the Piper Alpha tragedy are remembered and that their families and the general public have somewhere suitable to go to reflect."

Alex Salmond MSP, First Minister of Scotland, said: “I was MP for Banff and Buchan at the time of the Piper Alpha Disaster and it is vitally important that we continue to afford due respect to the memory of those who perished. Pound for Piper’s efforts to date will ensure that the memorial garden at Hazlehead Park is suitably regenerated in in time for next month’s commemorations of the 25th anniversary of the Disaster. The Charity’s ambitions to maintain the memorial gardens for the future will, of course, require continued and committed support from the community and the industry. Stork Technical Services have chosen a very worthy beneficiary for their latest fundraising efforts and I was delighted to offer my support.”
