Offshore News: Closed refineries - eight. Rigs - five missing. One port KO'd

Posted on 01.09.2005 - 17:56 EDT in OFFSHORE NEWS by Rons_ROV_Links

The U.S. Coast Guard has reported five oil rigs missing in the Gulf of Mexico after Katrina's passing, and the U.S. Minerals Management Service estimates 91 percent of production and eight refineries are out of action along the coast.

Crude in oil pipelines is not being pumped for want of electrical power and pictures reveal onshore plant flooded by one or two metres of water.
Reuters, meanwhile, reported the import hub of Port Fourchon, Louisiana has been crippled and cut off by the storm's tidal surge.
Meanwhile, one semi-submersible rig is grounded at South Pass and two are adrift.
Two semis are listing, and the Mars platform is badly damaged.
The Coast Guard itself has suffered destruction of property, and four staff are missing.
