An unmanned submersible vessel is searching waters off South Korea's southern resort island of Jeju for the missing pilots, wreckage and other evidence in the crash of a cargo jet late last month, officials said Monday.

The remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), belonging to a Japanese company, has been taking pictures of what appears to be the wreckage of the ill-fated Boeing-747 Asiana Airlines aircraft that crashed in waters some 130 kilometers west of Jeju on July 28, officials said.

If the objects are confirmed to have come from the plane, they will be raised later in the day, officials said.

The ROV's mobilization is part of efforts to determine the cause of the crash.

So far, about 900 pieces of the plane's wreckage have been found, but its fuselage; the flight data recorder, commonly known as the black box; and the bodies of the two missing pilots remain unaccounted for.
