GEMS Group ventures into new extremes

GEMS Group ventures into new extremesBrugge based survey specialists, GEMS Group, has successfully completed geophysical and shallow geology surveys at the Dogger Bank wind farm project off the UK's Yorkshire coast.

Operations, in water depths of between 18m and 63m, entailed 24,000 line/km analogue and 2D high resolution digital surveys under contract to the Anglo-Norwegian consortium, Forewind.

The Belgian survey company has also recently mobilised a new 77m vessel for North Sea operations, MV Aquarius.

Added to this, GEMS, which also maintains bases in the UK, Egypt, Nigeria, Qatar and the UAE, has been awarded a three year contract by AGIP KCO for metocean services in the Kazakhstan offshore zone of the Caspian Sea. The company says the services will be crucial as extreme meteorological conditions, shallow bathymetry, and fluctuating water levels in the northern part of the Caspian necessitate a well established multi-station metocean monitoring network in support of daily operations and long term field development.

GEMS' role will cover regular servicing of existing metocean monitoring stations while supervising quality control of all data. According to Mike Baker, the company's Business Development Director, the high profile project should lead to an expansion in the range of services available to AGIP and other Caspian Sea offshore clients.
