Specialist Subsea Services (S³), provider of ROV and survey services to the international energy industry, has announced the acquisition of geoscience consultancy Caledonian Geotech as part of its strategic growth plans.
Caledonian Geotech, based in Dundee and formed in 1980, provides services including the practical application of geology, land and marine geophysics, hydrography, engineering and oceanography to onshore and nearshore development and maintenance projects.
Its operations complement the ROV, survey, geotechnical and data management services of S³, headquartered in Aberdeen and with operations at international energy industry hubs.
S³'s Managing Director, Graeme Kidd, commented: "With the ever expanding near shore engineering and construction market, in particular the renewable energy sector, Caledonian Geotech is well positioned to provide extensive support services to operators and contractors alike. I am delighted to welcome the team to the S³ family where they will complement our existing offshore subsea services, which now cover the entire water column from 0m to 3000m. We plan to continue to develop our UK presence and build on work we have carried out internationally, with Mediterranean and West Africa being the main focus of the year ahead."
Caledonian Geotech's founder, Richard Robinson commented: "I am very pleased that the name and reputation of Caledonian Geotech will be carried forward by the team at S³ and that both myself and Mary McMurtrie, the Company Manager, will continue to support the development of the company going into the future."
With clients drawn from the civil and petroleum engineering industries, and with an extensive track record spanning 30 years, Caledonian Geotech's professional, multi-disciplinary team offers a comprehensive package of geo-scientific services embracing:
• Coastal stability assessments
• Land based geophysical & geotechnical investigations
• Marine hydrographic and geophysical surveys
• Inspection of subsea assets including pipelines, cables and small platforms such as wind farm mono-piles

Caledonian Geotech has a readily accessible, UK-wide coastal data repository spanning 30 years of data gathering, both onshore and nearshore, around the UK and Ireland.
The firm's fleet of shallow-draughted vessels includes a 20 metre ex-pilot cutter converted for survey & inshore ROV operations, and a collection of smaller vessels for shallow water work in confined seaways. The company also has access to a larger 30 metre catamaran for 24-hour offshore hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical survey and ROV operations through an existing close relationship with the Marine Institute of Gdansk. Among past projects is survey work for the Skye Bridge, with clients including Transco and Scottish local authorities.
S³'s highly-experienced team has completed work in the UK and internationally for companies including Repsol YPF, Interocean Marine Services Limited and Phoenix International Inc.
