Wherever you are going, travelling abroad can be exciting, stimulating and interesting. However, in some places there are obvious risks and there are precautions that everyone should take - before leaving, during the journey and while they are at their destination.
With the safety of member-company personnel in mind, the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has published 'Safe Travel & Security' a 20 minute DVD with versions in. English, Brazilian Portuguese, Latin American Spanish, Italian and French.
"No one set of guidelines will fit all the countries you may visit," explains Hugh Williams, Chief Executive of IMCA. "Protocols, cultures, regions and political circumstances will affect what is and is not acceptable. Security is of paramount importance to our member companies and depends on each one of their travelling personnel being aware of those differences and using common sense to behave in an appropriate way.
The DVD looks at pre-planning for a trip and at sensible ways of being 'street wise' and thus 'street safe' when overseas. For those wanting more information there are references to guidance published by the IMCA Security Task Force. There are simple tips like remembering to take a photocopy of a passport and keeping it separately; and taking a spare or 'robber's' purse or wallet that can be handed over in a mugging - useful things that will act as great reminders to us all, however used we are to travelling. There is no doubt that simple precautions can help to ensure maximum safety."
Copies of the DVD are available to members at £10 and non-members at £20 from publications[at]imca-int[dot]com or from the publications pages on the IMCA website. When ordering the language of choice needs to be specified.
