Contract Awards: MMT awarded survey contract in the Red Sea

Posted on 07.09.2010 - 13:00 UTC in SURVEY NEWS by Rons_ROV_Links

MMT awarded survey contract in the Red SeaMMT is part of a unique cooperation between the Egyptian Electricity holding Company (EEHC) and the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). A HVDC power cable is to be laid between Cairo in Egypt and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, both on land and at the seafloor. MMT will perform pre-lay surveys in the Red Sea.

The vessel transit is almost 4000 nautical miles and will take 18 days, including passage through the Suez Canal. This is the furthest Franklin has ventured since she's been in the company. Apart from our largest vessel Franklin, our smallest vessel Ping is also contracted for the project. Ping will be transported on Franklin to the Red Sea and will be used for near shore surveys at ground waters.

The project is one of the most challenging MMT has ever met, because of extreme water depths down to 1500 metres and steep slopes with coral reefs. In 2007 MMT did survey between Greece and Italy for IGI down to 1750 metres.

The survey is due this autumn and calculated to take 28 days. MMT will altogether have 70 employees involved in the project at the Red Sea.
