National Geographic Channel to Air 2-Part Special on Deep-Sea Oil Divers in the Gulf of Mexico
Delta Divers, a two-part special set in the vast offshore oil and gas infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico, home to more than 6000 gas and oil platforms and 35,000 miles of pipeline will make its world television premiere on Wednesday, May 19th, at 9pm ET/PT on the National Geographic Channel with the second episode airing on Wednesday the 26th at 9pm ET/PT. The two-part special details the high-risk, high-paying job of offshore commercial oil and gas divers in the Gulf of Mexico. Delta Divers offers a unique view into what it’s like to live and work in this remote and rarely seen world
Produced by the Peabody Award-winning team of Scott B and Sandy Guthrie of Antenna Films, Delta Divers chronicles the dramatic stories of deep-sea divers as they take on the toughest challenges, working in the forbidding depths hundreds of feet beneath the surface of the water. Tasks like welding, pouring concrete, rigging, and hydraulics take on a dimension of danger when they are performed in such an extreme environment.
The first episode “Delta Divers: Diver Down” will follow three dive teams as they take on some of the largest challenges the Gulf of Mexico has to offer. On the Southern Hercules barge a team must disassemble and plug an aging subsea oil well. Meanwhile, on the DB1 barge Supervisor Drye and his team of divers disassemble a hurricane-toppled oil rig with the dangerous job of underwater “burning,” or cutting through steel with a torch. Next, aboard the Arapaho, a dive team works together during 28-hour dive rotation to keep a diver safe as they burn through the legs of a huge platform.
The second one-hour special, “Delta Divers: Racing the Storm,” continues with the Southern Hercules team as they realize dangerous bubbles are flowing from the well that will further complicate an already difficult job. Nearby, aboard the Arapaho barge, the team faces a tight schedule and the constant threat of heavy weather as they take apart a massive platform underwater.
