Mel Fitzgerald, chief executive officer of Subsea 7, was recognised for his significant and positive impact on the oil and gas sector from both a business and wider industry perspective. The Outstanding Contribution Award was made by Paul Garnham from Shell UK at the 25th Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards.
The event, often referred to as the oil & gas industry ‘Oscars', was attended by over 450 people from Scotland's oil and gas industry.
The Outstanding Award category was sponsored by Shell UK and recognises an individual's vision, key achievements, milestones and the esteem in which they are held amongst peers and the industry.
Malcolm Webb, Chief Executive of Oil & Gas UK paid particular reference to Mel's contribution to the wider oil & gas industry by saying:
"Mel has not only been an inspiring leader of Subsea 7 but he has also found time to continually foster and promote constructive industry collaboration not only within the subsea community but also across the whole UK offshore oil and gas industry and between Industry and Government. A sometime and highly influential member of the Pilot forum, the Industry Leadership Team and the Contractors and Suppliers leadership Team, Mel played a crucial leading role in the creation of Oil & Gas UK which for the first time brought all the industry representation within these bodies into one cohesive and leading pan industry organisation."
Supporting his nomination and delighted with his award was Dave Blackwood, previously Head of BP in Aberdeen, who said:
"Mel has made a huge contribution to the industry in the North Sea by his contributions to the formation of Oil and Gas UK and by growing Subsea 7 from its earliest days to the world class subsea player it is today."
Accepting the award Mr Fitzgerald said:
"I am collecting this award not just for myself but for all those people that I have worked with over the last 30 years and in particular all those at Subsea 7. The success of our industry depends on how we all work together, colleagues, clients, subcontractors and government. This industry was exciting 30 years ago and it is just as exciting today, if not more so. The North Sea is recognised for the contribution that it has made to the industry globally and it has a great future in front of it."
Subsea 7 has had a record of recent successes at the Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards. In 2009 it won the Safety Leadership Award and in 2008 it won the Export Award in addition to being highly commended in the Succeeding Through People category. In recognition of both these awards it was awarded the premier Overall Excellence Award in 2008.
