London UK, 10 February 2010: Global Marine Systems has announced the completion of the Trinidad cable landing, the next milestone in the installation of the Suriname Guyana Submarine Cable System (SGSCS). The Trinidad link will provide direct access to high volumes of bandwidth from providers in North American and elsewhere, dramatically improving access to the internet and related communications services. The landing occurred on 9 February 2010 at Macqueripe Bay Trinidad.
The 1,127-kilometer SGSCS system will be the first of its kind in this region and is expected to ultimately have the potential to increase current telecom bandwidth to more than 3,000 times what is currently available in these areas. The system makes use of Columbus Networks at their Trinidad cable station with onward transit connectivity to the region and North America.
The SGSCS system is a project which has been jointly undertaken by Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. Ltd and Telesur of Suriname. Once operational the network is expected to allow for enhanced and highly reliable, IP-based communications services, making global communications generally accessible for both business and personal use throughout these countries, as well as provide a cost effective alternative to satellite back up which is used today.
SGSCS is being installed by Global Marine Systems (globalmarinesystems.com) along with joint venture partner Huawei Marine Networks (huaweimarine.com) who are supplying the electronics and the RPT 1660 repeaters used throughout the system.
“The project continues on schedule with this the third major shore landing of the system.” said Ian Douglas, Managing Director of Telecoms for Global Marine Systems. “The quality of the landing infrastructure and terminal station facilities in Trinidad will play a crucial role in the overall success of the project. Given that importance, we are pleased to be working in Trinidad with Columbus Networks for this crucial element of the project.
