SMD one of the world’s leading subsea engineering companies has entered into a collaboration agreement with Atlantis Resources Corporation (ARC), one of the world’s leading developers of tidal energy technology to manufacture the world’s largest tidal turbine system, which is due to be deployed at the EMEC test site in Orkney this summer.
The AK-1000 turbine will have a rotor diameter of 18 meters and will be capable of producing 1MW of power at 2.6m/s.
SMD are grateful for the continued support of the Technology Strategy Board who are providing significant financial support for the project.
This agreement is the first in what SMD hope to be many collaborative agreements with marine renewable device developers.
SMD is also looking to apply its considerable subsea know how and experience to develop the required remotely operated enabling technologies to help deploy and maintain devices through building wider collaborative agreements with technology developers, installation and support contractors.
The scale of this project and the commercial interest shown in the marine renewables sector has enabled SMD to create a new renewables division to bring its considerable subsea engineering expertise to bear in offshore wind, wave and tidal power markets.
With its North East design and manufacturing facilities, located on the banks of the Tyne, SMD are well placed with a strong local engineering supply chain to support marine renewable technologies. These technologies are critical to the UK’s energy sustainability, demand growth, carbon reduction targets and exports.
