Global Marine Systems has announced the completion of the Guyana cable landing, an important milestone in the installation of the Suriname Guyana Submarine Cable System (SGSCS). The 1,127-kilometer SGSCS system will be the first of its kind in this region and is expected to ultimately have the potential to increase current telecom bandwidth more than 3,000 times what is currently available in these areas.
The landing was officially recognized at a ceremony held January 9, 2010. In attendance at the ceremony were Guyana's President, the Hon. Bharrat Jagdeo, as well as other officials and dignitaries.
The SCSCS system is a project which has been jointly undertaken by Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. Ltd and Telesur of Suriname. Once operational the network is expected to allow for enhanced and highly reliable, low-cost, IP-based communications services, making global communications generally accessible for both business and personal use throughout these countries, as well as provide a cost effective alternative to satellite back up which is used today.
SCSCS is being installed by Global Marine Systems along with joint venture partner Huawei Marine Networks which is supplying the electronics and the RPT 1660 repeaters used throughout the system.
"The landing of the cable in Guyana is an important milestone in this project," said Ret'd Major General Joe Singh, CEO/GM of GT&T. "Global Marine has done an excellent job of managing the project, installing the cable, and keeping everything on schedule. We look forward to the day, later this year, when the system will provide a full range of high quality communications services to the people of Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad."
"The cutting edge telecommunications system which is being put in place by both Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. and Telesur of Suriname will usher in a new generation of communications capabilities," said Ian Douglas, Managing Director of Telecoms for Global Marine Systems. "We are really pleased to be playing a role in such an important network installation."
