MMT AB (Marin Mätteknik AB) has recently been awarded a marine survey contract for a planned new HVDC connection across the Baltic Sea. The work will be conducted for Svenska Kraftnät, who administers and runs the national electrical grid in Sweden. The cable system, namned NordBalt, is planned to commence in Klaipeda, Lithuania and end in either Karlshamn, Kristianopel or Sandvik in Sweden.
The seabed will be mapped in a wide corriodor between the two countries and will include very detailed studies of the seabed in order to asses the conditions for a marine cable installation.
The marine survey will include, but not be limited to:
• Geophysical survey to chart wide corridor utilising multibeam echo sounder, side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler and magnetometer
• Geotechnical survey to verify the seabed sediment properties utilising gravity or vibro corer
• Cable crossing survey to identify existing cables utilising a TSS cable tracker
• Diver swim survey to investigate the coastal zones in respective countries.
The work will commence in September 2009 with MMT AB survey vessels Triad. At a later stage the vessels Franklin and Ping will join the project, which is to be completed this year.
