He has one of the coolest jobs in Hawai‘iTerry Kerby is the chief pilot for the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL). He leads expeditions in HURL’s submersibles to research areas a mile and more beneath the sea, investigating sites as diverse as active undersea volcanoes such as Lo‘ihi, south of the Big Island, sunken ships, and lost surplus WWII weapons. “After 30 years of piloting,” says Kerby, “it’s the same rush as I had doing it for the first time.”
