JDR Cable Systems, today celebrated the opening of its new deepwater quayside facility at Hartlepool dock in North East England. JDR Hartlepool was officially opened by Iain Wright, Member of Parliament for Hartlepool, at an event attended by representatives from leading energy companies, political figures and regional development agencies.
The new purpose-built state-of-the-art 100,000 sq ft facility incorporates two 2,200 tonne carousels and is the only site in the UK designed specifically to manufacture subsea power cables for the oil and gas sector and the burgeoning offshore renewables market. The location at Hartlepool dock allows the cables to be spooled directly onto cable-laying vessels.
JDR will supply, amongst other projects, 200km of inter-array cables for the 140 wind turbine generators of the world's largest offshore wind farm - Greater Gabbard off the coast of Eastern England.
Patrick Phelan, Managing Director of JDR Cable Systems, commented: "The new JDR Hartlepool facility has been built in response to a significant growth in demand from customers for our products and a move to expand our offering to the renewable energy sector. The development of the offshore renewables industry, combined with the need to recover more oil and gas reserves from existing fields, has led to an increase in demand for highly specialised subsea power cables. The new site in Hartlepool has been designed specifically to manufacture these products, along with long-length step-out umbilicals for oil and gas projects. The response from the market has been very positive and we are at an advanced stage of tendering for many other projects."
Patrick Phelan continued: "The new facility at Hartlepool Dock represents a major step change and investment in JDR's growth plans. We believe this is the best location to serve the needs of our clients in the UK and continental Europe and we are further delighted to be able to make a significant contribution to the economy of the North East, particularly in the current economic climate."
Iain Wright, Member of Parliament for Hartlepool, commented: "JDR is a crucial supplier to the energy industry as well as a fantastic example of a well-managed, innovative company. I am delighted that Hartlepool has been chosen as the home of such an impressive facility. I am sure that the local economy and community will benefit from the factory for many years to come."
JDR's expansion to Hartlepool was supported by a £850,000 Selective Finance for Investment (SFI) grant now branded Grant for Business Investment from Regional Development Agency One North East.
Ian Williams, Director of Business and Industry at One North East, commented: "One North East is pleased to support JDR in its expansion to Hartlepool and with it the creation of new jobs and investment on Teesside. Today's opening is testament to the high calibre of skills, sites and supply chain opportunities on offer in the North East which are helping to position the region as a hub for oil and gas and renewable energy companies."
David Robinson, CEO of PD Ports, commented: "The growth in the offshore and renewable energy sectors is highly attractive to PD Ports as we have the capabilities at both Hartlepool Dock and at Teesport. Most significantly, the offshore and renewable energy sector has the potential to attract a number of major employment opportunities in the near future, and in the current economic climate this is particularly welcome. In the longer term we very much look forward to developing Hartlepool Docks as a centre of excellence for the offshore support sector."
Neil Kenley, Tees Valley Regeneration's Strategic Investment and Marketing Director, commented: "JDR's expansion to Hartlepool not only represents the continued success of the company but also a huge confidence in the area and the local workforce. To attract a global organisation of this calibre in such difficult economic times speaks volumes for Tees Valley and we will continue to offer support and assistance for the benefit of everyone involved in today's fantastic announcement."
