Major expansion of IFM-Geomar glider program announcedTeledyne Webb Research has announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply IFM-GEOMAR Kiel in Germany with six Slocum gliders. Teledyne Webb's Slocum glider is an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that is driven by a variable buoyancy system as opposed to a traditional propeller. The long-range and duration capabilities of Slocum gliders make them ideally suited for extensive data collection over a large area. Carrying a wide variety of sensors, the vehicle can be programmed to patrol for weeks at a time, surfacing to transmit their data to shore while downloading new instructions at regular intervals.

The gliders being delivered to IFM-GEOMAR are 1km and 200m depth vehicles with additional optional ballast drives for 30 m depths. These gliders will include a long endurance payload bay with Aanderaa Optodes for DO (Dissolved Oxygen) measurements and Wet Labs FLNTUslks for bio-optical research. J. Bornhoeft represented Teledyne Webb Research in this sale.

To date, Teledyne Webb Research has delivered 137 Slocum gliders to 42 user groups around the globe, which have collected data over 120,000 km of the world's oceans.

IFM-GEOMAR is a research institute located in Kiel, Germany. The organization's mandate is the interdisciplinary investigation of all relevant aspects of modern marine sciences, from sea floor geology to marine meteorology.

Teledyne Webb Research, a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies, is a leading manufacturer of autonomous underwater gliding vehicles, drifters and profilers for oceanographic research and monitoring.
