SeaBotix participated in the 10th Annual Ironman 70.3 in Oceanside, CA on April 4, 2009. Though limited to the water portion only, the SeaBotix LBV200L Mini-ROV survived the early morning start with flying colors.
In an effort to expand technologies used to provide live coverage of the Ironman races, SeaBotix was called in to fly one of their Mini-ROVs to give a live subsea view of the Ironman swimmers. This video feed was then patched into the overall event coverage and broadcast live across the world. In addition to providing live video of the swimmers, the SeaBotix LBV was also on-call in case there was an in-water emergency that required immediate response. This additional on-site emergency response measure was a first of its kind.
All-in-all, the morning was a great success given the 1m (3.3ft.) underwater visibility. This required the Mini-ROV to get relatively close to the passing swimmers to get a good shot. A couple of swimmers looked as if they were a little surprised to see the Mini-ROV is the water next to them, but they did not seem to mind.
