MMT AB awarded marine survey contract for fixed link across FehmarnbeltMMT AB (Marin Mätteknik AB) has been awarded a hydrographical survey contract for the fixed link across Fehmarnbelt.

The contract has been awarded by Ramboll who is one of the consultancy companies working for the Femern Bælt A/S with the investigations for the planned link. The assignment is focused on hydrographical mapping of an almost 1000 km² large area between Denmark and Germany. The survey will result in a very high-resolution 3D model over the area.

The work will commence with MMT ABs Survey vessels Triad and Ping in May 2009 and will continue for approximately two months time. Both vessels are equipped with Kongsberg EM3002 Multibeam echo sounders. The larger vessel Triad is also planned for side scan sonar and chirp investigations as well as ROV inspections at selected sites within the area.

About the fixed link across Fehmarnbelt

Denmark and Germany has signed a treaty for the construction of a fixed link across the Fehmarnbelt. The link will close the gap in the infrastructure between Scandinavia and the European continent and will hugely improve traffic conditions between the two parts of Europe. The coast-coast link will create an approx. 19 km long stretch between Rødby and Puttgarden and will comprise an electrified, double-track railway and a four-lane motorway. The preferred technical solution is a cable-stayed bridge. However, an immersed tunnel is an alternative. If a tunnel solution is chosen, it will be the worlds longest Road/Rail tunnel and more than three times the length of the Trans-Bay Tube Bart Tunnel in San Francisco in California, the current world record holder. If a bridge is chosen it will be the largest bridge project ever undertaken in Europe.
