New orders for Nortek deep-water Aquadopps

New orders for Nortek deep-water AquadoppsThe Nortek DW Aquadopp is gaining popularity, both within scientific institutes and offshore-related companies. Recently, two fairly large orders came in that reinforced this impression. The combination of the DW Aquadopp's ability to be deployed for very long unattended periods of time, with the well-documented performance of these instruments in low-scattering environments, has convinced the demanding users of deep-water instrumentation to go for the DW Aquadopp.

In late April the leading Mexican scientific institute CICESE ordered twenty 2000m and eight 6000m Aquadopps. These will be used for long term monitoring of deep water currents in the Mexican part of the Gulf of Mexico. Mexico's shallow water oil reserves are rapidly being drained and, consequently, PEMEX, the state-owned Mexican oil company will in the future move their activities into deeper water. Numerical models show that the deep-water currents in this part of the world's oceans can be quite strong, but the lack of measurement data is striking. PEMEX therefore contracted CICESE to carry out a monitoring program to provide long term information about deep-water current speed and direction. This information will in turn be used as design data for new offshore installations. CICESE chose the Nortek DW Aquadopps due to their excellent performance and documented long term stability.

In May, the South-African survey company Metocean Services Inc. (MSI) was awarded a contract for the Norwegian oil company StatoilHydro, to monitor deep-water currents in the Norwegian trench outside the coastline of Norway. A total of 16 deep-water current meters are needed, and MSI will add 13 new units to their existing pool of three 2000m Aquadopps.
