UK Hydrographic Office makes a pledge to training

UK Hydrographic Office makes a pledge to trainingLeading nautical chart and publications provider, the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), has publicly committed to the development and continual training of its workforce.

The UKHO, which employs around 1,000 people at its Admiralty Way site in Taunton, has become the latest company in Somerset to make the national Skills Pledge.

The Skills Pledge - led by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) - has been introduced as part of a broad campaign to improve the skills of Britain's workforce in response to the Leitch report.

It is a voluntary public commitment by the leadership of a company or organisation to support all its employees to develop their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy, and work towards nationally recognised qualifications to at least Level 2 (equivalent of 5 good GCSEs).

Richard Brooks, UKHO's Head of Transformation, Change and HR, said:

"We are absolutely committed to developing our workforce - our staff are the most important component of our company.

"This organisation has always had a strong training ethos. Everybody who works for us is supported in their personal development and we help them further the skills and qualifications necessary to do their job, whether that be an NVQ or an MBA."

Trish Taylor, LSC Area Director for Dorset and Somerset, praised the UKHO for its commitment to the Skills Pledge.

She added: "It is all about providing Britain with a more skilled and competitive workforce. Those companies and organisations who make the Skills Pledge will see the difference in their bottom-line through improved productivity, staff retention and fewer errors.

"For those employees who do not already have a full Level 2 qualification the government will provide funding to help them gain basic literacy and numeracy skills as well as their first full Level 2.

Making the Skills Pledge also enables employers to benefit from the Train to Gain service, through which a whole host of training can be accessed, from NVQs, Apprenticeships and management development.

"And it is open to employers of all sizes in the private, public and voluntary sectors, "added Trish.
