Alam Maritim expanding abroad with ROV and drilling rig servicesAlam Maritim Resources Bhd's remotely operating vehicles (ROV) and jack-up drilling rigs services are set to propel the company into the international arena.

Predominantly an offshore support vessels (OSVs) provider, 17 of its 20 vessels are deployed for local contracts while the rest are in the Middle East and Indonesia.

Managing director Azmi Ahmad said Alam Maritim (Labuan) Inc, via wholly-owned Singapore-based subsidiary Alam Subsea Pte Ltd, would launch type three ROV services later this week.

Alam Subsea was incorporated on January 1 and Alam Maritim (Labuan) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alam Maritim.

Alam Subsea is based in Singapore as our 60%-owned subsidiary, Eastar Offshore Pte Ltd, is also operating ROV there.

Managing director Azmi Ahmad"The international market for ROV is stronger in Singapore," he told StarBiz.

ROV, or underwater robot, is used for underwater operations, such as pipeline repair works, and there are four types of ROV services for the different complexity of work.

Currently, Alam Maritim offers type two ROV inspection-class service for water depth of 500m but will market type three ROV working-class services for water depth of 1,500m soon.

The company was also said to be working on the type four ROV construction-class services for water depth of 3,000m to be introduced in the third quarter.

Alam Maritim on January 4 was appointed agent for FEM Maritime AS, a Norwegian-based company, to promote jack-up drilling rigs. The rigs are to be offered for sale or lease on bareboat charter basis to potential third party users and oil majors.

He said Alam Maritim had received one of seven vessels to be delivered this year, which should boost its OSV business.

"We received the anchor-handling tug supply (ATHS) vessel on February 11. The vessel cost US$12.5mil (RM40.2mil," he said. Currently, with the AHTS, the company owns 21 OSVs.
