Contract Awards: Flag Telecom awards $1.5bn cable order to Fujitsu

Indian telecoms firm Reliance Communications Ltd. said Monday its FLAG Telecom unit has awarded a $1.5 billion contract to Japan's Fujitsu Ltd. for the construction of next-generation network, or NGN, submarine cable systems.
Upon completion, the new cable will nearly double the length of FLAG's existing network from 65,000 kilometers to 115,000 kilometers, Reliance Communications said.
The project is due to be completed by fiscal year 2009-10, the company said.
Reliance Communications Chairman Anil Ambani said:"Worldwide, enterprise and institutional data services is a $90-billion market. With the completion of the NGN cable, FLAG will be the only service provider to reach over 60 countries on a privately owned cable system."
