ROV NEWS: Deep Ocean to collaborate in commercialization of ROVMind®

Posted on 03.09.2007 - 14:00 UTC in ROV NEWS by Rons_ROV_Links

Deep Ocean to collaborate in commercialization of ROVMind® Hydro Quebec, the largest provider of hydro electric power in North America and Deep Ocean Engineering, one of the world's leading suppliers of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) have agreed to further their long term collaboration with the signing of a partnership agreement for the commercialization of ROVMind®.

ROVMind® is a ground-breaking positioning and piloting software system that enables the precise inspection of hydro facilities with the use of the ROV. For the first time, hydro owners and third-party inspection companies will be able to precisely inspect dams and other facilities and to return to the same position at any point in the future.

The software is the result of years of research and development by IREQ the R&D group maintained by Hydro Quebec. In late 2005, Deep Ocean Engineering delivered an ROV to Hydro Quebec that is equipped with the new software and sensor tools to make the navigation fully functional.

In 2006, technicians from Hydro Quebec utilized ROVMind® and the Deep Ocean ROV to successfully complete 22 inspections. The results of those inspections were astounding: several inspections were successfully completed that would not have been possible with the use of divers due to hazardous conditions; in cases where divers were an option, savings of several million dollars were achieved by using the new ROV and software.

In 2007, Hydro Quebec anticipates expanding the use of the new program to approximately 35 inspections which will generate even greater savings for the utility.

In addition to enabling precision ROV piloting, the other major benefit of the new system is the documented record that is captured for each inspection which enables very rapid production of a report of the inspection.

Deep Ocean Engineering, Inc. is a leader in the design and manufacturing of remotely controlled underwater systems, providing innovative, cost-effective solutions for offshore, inshore, military, nuclear, and scientific applications. In the coming months, Deep Ocean will be meeting with interested parties to more fully describe the new system and to assess its benefits in actual operation.
