Aberdeen-based TSMarine (Contracting) Ltd has become the first marine well intervention company in the world to achieve a 5-star rating following a rigorous audit of its health and safety management system.

This is the latest in a string of top safety awards for the company, which achieved the Five Star grading - a unique accreditation provided by the British Safety Council - at its first attempt.

The primary aim of the Five Star audit is to provide an external assessment of the safety management arrangements developed by the company and to test the effectiveness of their implementation, both at head office and on board company operated vessels.

In order to achieve the Five Star grading, a full review of the health and safety performance of the business was carried out, from the management of health and safety to the implementation of associated systems in the workplace.

Each section was divided into elements that attracted a maximum pre-determined numerical value. The total score on a grading scale then determined how many stars (1-5) were awarded to TSMarine.

The audit also cross-checked each of the company's systems to ensure the whole infrastructure was as good as it could be.

The five key areas which were scrutinised were safety organisation; management control systems; emergency control systems; management of accidents and incidents; and workplace implementations.

These areas covered a variety of disciplines including policies, procedures, planning, safety inspections, procurement, training, risk management and safe working practices and employee consultation, communication and involvement.

As an added benefit to improved safety performance, the rating means TSMarine will also save up to 25% on insurance premiums.

Alasdair Cowie, managing director of TSMarine, said the rating was a major boost for company's plans for future development and commercial potential, and its targets of boosting annual earnings to £100million.

"This is yet another huge success for TSMarine and again cements our ongoing commitment to ensuring all our employees in the UK, Norway and Australia are contributing to a positive safety culture in line with industry best practice," he said.

"As a young company this is a boost to staff morale as well as helping us to minimise rates of accident and injury by giving us a clear benchmark for the effectiveness of our health and safety systems.

"We have experienced exceptional growth since forming in 2004 and safety has been one of the cornerstones on which we have built this growth. We are delighted that our commitment has been scrutinised and recognised, as well as giving us areas to focus on to ensure that we continue to grow and develop."

Earlier this year, TSMarine won the British Safety Council's esteemed International Safety Award for the second year in a row.

It was also awarded the first National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA) Safety Case approval for well intervention.
