It might seem odd choosing this issue of Energy to mark the 25th year since the Piper Alpha disaster of July 6, 1988, but we have taken our cue from the North Sea industry’s three-day Piper25 conference on June 18-20.
A quarter of a century is a long time . . . nearly a generation in the classic sense and long enough for direct memory of Piper to be eliminated from corporate minds. By that I mean the “Great Crew Change” that characterises this industry in a very particular way. I’ll come back to this.

Savante is proud to announce the release of the latest in their range of underwater subsea laser measurement solutions; APEX.
Designed to add scaled measurements to conventional ROV digital-stills or video footage, APEX projects precision parallel-aligned laser points in a reference grid pattern of known dimensions. Managing director Grant Thomson feels the new product fullfills an immediate requirement in the oil and gas sector for fast, intuitive and low cost subsea measurement; particularly for the sizing of debris or boulders as a component of pre product-installation or pre-trenching survey operations. "APEX is a result of lessons learned from a substantial UK-wide seabed survey programme used to classify dimensions of seabed rocks and marine fauna. Integrating four lasers into a single module dramatically increases the accuracy of this technique, whilst eliminating the cost, fuss and burden of providing mechanical brackets and cabling needed to arrange multiple lasers on a subsea vehicle." Prior to the official launch, Savante recieved multiple orders for the unit and commitments to further seabed surveys.
Specifications sheets for the APEX and APEX-lite (designed for microROVs) may be downloaded from;
