Telecom Egypt puts first 40G Mediterranean system in service using Alcatel-Lucent's advanced coherent technology
Telecom Egypt, Egypt's primary telecommunications services provider, and Alcatel-Lucent, have announced that the TE-NORTH Cable System, provisioned with 40 Gigabit per second (40G) wavelengths across the Mediterranean, is in service. TE-NORTH is the first Mediterranean cable network to provide commercial service using this newest 40G technology.
NKT Cables has entered into a contract with 50Hertz Offshore GmbH at a value of around 750 mDKK (95 mEUR) for the offshore wind farm Baltic 2. For NKT Cables, Baltic 2 will be another turnkey project which includes armoured high-voltage subsea cables, accessories and installation. The cables will be manufactured at the production facilities in Cologne.
SEACOM and Infinera Corp, a leading US-based digital optical networking equipment supplier, today announced that they had achieved a global first by successfully trialling five 100 Gigabit per second (100 Gb/s) channels of coherent optical transmission over a distance of 1732 kilometres. The 500Gb/s trial was run over and looped back across SEACOM's newly built 930 kilometre Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) fibre route which links the SEACOM Mtunzini cable landing station in KwaZulu Natal to the Teraco datacentre in Johannesburg.
