The news that signals consistent with the missing Malaysia Airlines plane have been detected has been called the most promising lead so far.

Experts are still urging caution at this stage, but if these "pings" detected by the Australian ship Ocean Shield are confirmed a recovery operation could at last get under way.

David Mearns, director of Blue Water Recoveries Ltd, said: "We've gone from little hope to a lot of hope in the space of a day.

Off Aberdeen, Scotland (CNN) -- Against a bright blue sky, seagulls noisily squabbled above us as we set off aboard a crew boat, feeling rather small as we gently weaved our way past the gigantic vessels docked in Aberdeen harbor. The calm conditions that had allowed us to easily film inside the port quickly changed once we left the harbor, as we came up against 25-knot winds, rolling waves and spray soaking us from all sides.

They have lain submerged off the coast of Britain for more than 70 years, but three unexploded German bombs were finally disposed of by a small device that looked like a Hubba Bubba chewing gum packet.

The 50kg devices barely shook the surface of the water as they were blown up by British explosives experts, although any marine life in the area may have got a bit of a shock as the boom radiated through the depths.

VideoRay The St. Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad recovered a drowning victim from Lake Superior off Brighton Beach with a VideoRay Pro 4 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) last Thursday.  Led by VideoRay consultants David Phillips and Tom Crossmon, the search & rescue team used the Pro 4 ROV equipped with a Teledyne BlueView P900 series imaging sonar to search for a 31-year-old man who was reported missing late Wednesday night.

 VideoRay Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Images Recently Discovered 175 Year Old Schooner in Lake Ontario A VideoRay underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) captured the first still images of the schooner Atlas since its sinking in 1839 in Lake Ontario near Oswego, New York.  Believed to be the oldest confirmed commercial schooner discovered in the Great Lakes, the wreckage was located in June 2013 by shipwreck enthusiasts Jim Kennard, Roger Pawlowski, and Roland Stevens using a high resolution DeepVision side scan sonar system.  They returned last week with the VideoRay ROV to obtain video recording of the shipwreck's remains.

SeaBotix While performing offshore work recently in the Bass Straight off the coast of Australia, an O-Tech 7 work class ROV spotted an object on the seafloor in 110 meters of water.  After closer examination, the object was discovered to be a SeaBotix LBV200-4 MiniROV. There was no tether attached.  The work class ROV pilot recovered the sunken LBV and returned it to the surface.
