Workers on a North Sea platform are unhappy at having to do with microwave meals, more than a week after the kitchen was damaged by a chip-pan fire.

One of the men on Talisman's Piper Bravo said yesterday: "People are getting fed up of this. There are 60 of us having to make do with food from five microwaves. We want to know when the kitchen can be used again."

A spokeswoman for Talisman said last night: "Since there was some local damage and a need to deep clean the (kitchen) area, there has been a reduced catering service available.

"Manning levels (on the platform) have been reduced by approximately 40 - from 100 to 60 - to minimise disruption during this period.

"We expect to be back to normal within the next few days."

She added: "During this period we have supplemented the platform catering service by bringing in microwave meals. The offshore crews fully understand the need to do this, and there have been no reported problems with these arrangements from the personnel currently on board.

"All other platform operations have continued as normal throughout the period. The Health and Safety Executive have been fully informed and involved throughout."
