International consortium to introduce new express cable system from Germany to the GulfA Memorandum of Understanding between four major international telecommunications companies has been signed to provide a new express cable system linking Frankfurt in Germany to Oman via Russia and Iran. Omantel of Sultanate of Oman, Telecommunications Infrastructure Company of Iran, UK based Cable &Wireless Worldwide, and leading Russian carrier Rostelecom have agreed to develop a new high capacity low latency international telecommunication system between Oman and Frankfurt in Germany transiting through Iran and Russia.

It is anticipated that the new cable system will be ready for service in May 2012 with work commencing on the development - that will be a mix of terrestrial and underwater cable elements - in May this year.

The cable will benefit from Oman's HUB with a superb geographical location and its multiple cable system and Frankfort's well establish connectivity to the rest of the world.

This new Europe Persia Express Gateway (EPEG) system will start in Sultanate of Oman connect to existing and future cable system planned to have a land station with Omantel and ultimately reach Frankfurt in Germany after crossing Iran and Russia.

The new cable system will contribute into enhancing the required capacities to accommodate the increasing traffic from the MENA region, Central Asia, Russia and Europe providing an alternative route to the Red Sea Systems. Once completed EPEG cable will complement the existing submarine and terrestrial cable landing in the consortium member's homelands and will play important role as traffic can be re-routed through this cable in case of natural disasters which have been known to affect multiple systems at once.
