Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited the state of Florida on Friday May 22, and held a press conference at the Miami Seaport. Secretary Napolitano was accompanied by FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and Assistant ICE Secretary John Morton. Secretary Napolitano was escorted on a tour of the Miami Seaport by Miami's Director of Field Operations, Harold Woodward.
The Secretary was given an overview of targeting and container examinations. She was shown a recently captured image of a marijuana seizure that had been discovered using the Smith Heiman HCV. The Secretary was briefed on the importance of LQV and seal checks and how they are used to undermine internal conspiracies. An on screen video presentation of underwater search techniques and an explanation of the operation of the underwater camera Little Benthic vehicle (LBV) was also provided. The Secretary was also able to view the actual devaning of a container and its contents as they were processed using a mobile 101 x ray van.
At the press conference the Secretary spoke on the importance of working together as a team and stressed the fact that we are safer today because of it. She was shown several seizures of counterfeit items dealing with intellectual property rights, and toys that were dangerous due to small parts that presented a chocking hazard and were in violation of consumer safety product guidelines. The Secretary and FEMA Administrator Fugate both spoke on the importance personal preparedness and how that can make a difference in facing challenges especially those brought on by hurricanes.
