SmartSearch, (a derivative of the successful Smartrak cable and pipeline tracking series), is a magnetic mapping system optimized for pipeline route munitions searches. Marin Matteknik ab purchased their first system for the Nord Stream work in July 2007.

The proven magnetic tracking technology of the Smartrak series has been modified by Terry Slater and Rob Nunn, Innovatum International Ltd, to produce SmartSearch, which is a magnetic mapping system particularly designed for underwater pipeline route munitions searches.

Munitions search of an underwater pipeline route will usually involve survey of an extensive area of seabed, seeking to locate or discount the presence of comparatively very small, randomly spaced, ferrous objects. The challenge is to find a proven method, which is able to perform a highly detailed magnetic mapping survey over a large area of seabed, within a feasible timescale and cost.

SmartSearch has the following key features:

•  A wide sensor array of up to 6.6 metres width (a maximum of 12 sensors spaced at 60mm).
•  A rapid survey speed of up to 4 knots, which is achieved due to high speed data acquisition: a data point is acquired around 6-14 times per second on each sensor.
•  Highly sensitive magnetic sensors: a resolution of 1 nanotesla per 30cm allows measurements of very small vertical gradients. Post processing software combines the measured fields from each sensor to produce a field gradient map.
•  Like the Smartrak series, the system can be operated from the smaller Observation Class ROV. The sensor frame folds back down either side of the ROV during launch and recovery. Small modern ROVs show very low levels of magnetic noise, which allow the full potential of SmartSearch to be realized.
•  Post processing software will generate a variety of charts and graphical outputs, giving excellent visualisation of the fields mapped.
•  Items of interest can either be assessed immediately during survey, or post processing of data, by selecting from the onscreen map described, and shown in 3D graphical format.

SmartSearch is a proven system which, since august 2007, has been successfully performing munitions search on the Nord Stream pipeline. Innovatum has appreciated the comment that SmartSearch "is so boring to operate, it just keeps going, nothing ever goes wrong".
