Columbus Networks completes US$32 million undersea network to TrinidadColumbus Networks, the premier wholesale provider of Internet and bandwidth in the Pan Caribbean region, and a subsidiary of Columbus Communications Inc., announced today that it has completed installation and placed into service a U.S.$32 million undersea fiber optic network. This new network connects Trinidad & Tobago to Curacao and to the rest of Columbus' ARCOS undersea network, which currently provides connectivity from the U.S. to 18 other countries.

"Demand for bandwidth throughout the region, and in particular Trinidad & Tobago, is significant and rapidly growing," said Paul Scott, president of Columbus Networks. "This new high strength fiber network is in direct response to the growing demand among regional communications companies that require additional capacity for Trinidad and for the eastern Caribbean to meet their customers' requirements."

The 1,000-kilometer high capacity undersea fiber optic link is capable of transporting almost two terabits of data per second and will be Trinidad's fastest link to the Internet.

"In practical terms, with this amount of capacity the entire population of Trinidad could simultaneously download and watch their favorite YouTube video clip, chat with friends and relatives around the world, and electronically transfer one million businesses letters", added Mr. Scott.

Prior to the completion of this fiber optic system, Columbus Networks was processing advance orders for bandwidth from many regional communications providers, including Flow Trinidad, broadband cable television company also owned by Columbus Communications Inc. Communication companies primarily utilize undersea network bandwidth to transport broadband data communications, which is essential to enable their triple play service offering (voice, video and data).

Columbus Networks has built a new landing station in Chaguaramas for its Trinidad-Curacao link, with seamless fiber-optic connectivity to various city center points-of-presence, (POP's) throughout Trinidad. Columbus Networks offers a service portfolio to Internet Service Providers, Telecommunications and Broadband service providers, that includes IP transit and Capacity Services ranging in speed from 1.5Mbps to 10Gbps, GigE, 10GigE, in addition to international private lines circuits (IPLC's), collocation, managed services, and other advanced telecommunications offerings.
