Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) selects Hydroid’s REMUS 600 AUV

Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) selects Hydroid’s REMUS 600 AUVHydroid, LLC, a leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), announced today that it has won a contract for a REMUS 600 AUV from the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), an internationally renowned marine research facility that has been committed to promoting, delivering and supporting high-quality independent research and education in marine science since 1884. The Scottish Association for Marine Science conducts research on a broad spectrum of issues from deep sea fisheries to biochemistry and climate change, and plans to use Hydroid's REMUS 600 to access near-bottom regions of the continental slope allowing for enhanced exploration of Scotland's continental shelf environment.

"The ability to make high-resolution autonomous measurements from a stable subsurface platform, such as the REMUS, will greatly enhance our future operations," said Tim Boyd of SAMS. "Our department has research interests in the circulation and sea-ice dynamics of the polar regions, and the depth and endurance capabilities of the REMUS 600 will enable us to make high-quality, high-resolution observations of relevant polar processes."

Initially, the Scottish Association for Marine Science will use its REMUS to make standard oceanographic measurements of velocity, temperature and salinity in conjunction with ocean turbulence measurements to better understand Scotland's continental shelf. The team selected the REMUS 600, which can travel to depths of up to 600 meters, not only to allow for more complete exploration of the shelf environment, but also because the AUV increases the lab's future sampling capabilities with its greater battery capacity and range, improved navigational accuracy and larger payload capacity. Moving forward, the team is planning to utilize the AUV for operations in polar regions by enhancing the navigational accuracy and endurance capabilities and integrating an upward-looking multibeam sonar for investigating the underside of sea-ice.

Hydroid's REMUS AUVs can be fitted with a number of different types of sensors and cameras and have been used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping and scientific sampling and mapping. Hydroid's AUVs are currently being used by many research facilities and Navies around the world.
