Phoenix recovers Adam Air black boxes Phoenix International, Inc., (Phoenix), announced the successful recovery of the two Adam Air Flight 574 black boxes from a water depth of 1,786 meters using its Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), REMORA. The Indonesian Boeing 737-400 and its 102 passengers and crew crashed into the Java Sea west of Pare Pare, South Sulawesi on a January 1, 2007 flight from Surabaya, East Java to Manado, North Sulawesi.

The recovery operation brought to a close a critical element of the continuing process to discover why the aircraft was lost. Indonesian authorities have sent the Flight Data and Cockpit Voice Recorders to the US National Transportation Safety Board for analysis and possible determination of the cause of the crash.

Phoenix conducted the original search and discovered the debris field in late January, using specialized equipment from the Naval Sea Systems Command's Office of the Supervisor of Salvage and Diving and a support ship from the US Naval Oceanographic Office. Phoenix was subsequently awarded a commercial contract to recover the black boxes using its 6000 msw depth capable ROV, REMORA. The Phoenix designed vehicle was mobilized aboard the EDT Offshore vessel, M/T EAS, which is home ported in Limassol, Cyprus. Upon arriving at the crash scene in late August, Phoenix conducted an extraordinarily efficient operation in which it comprehensively inspected the debris field, then found and retrieved both items of interest. The long interval between the initial search and commencement of the recovery operation brought concern that the boxes might be covered in sediment. As it turned out the concern was justified, but the team's expertise in conducting such operations resulted in positive results. Five ROV dives were conducted in all, resulting in 109 hours of productive work time on the seafloor. This project was another in a series of highly successful search and recovery operations undertaken by Phoenix using EDT Offshore vessels.

Phoenix provides manned and unmanned underwater operations, design engineering, and project management services to clients in the offshore oil & gas, defense, and other ocean-interest industries worldwide. Expertise is available from six regional offices in the areas of wet and dry hyperbaric welding, conventional and atmospheric diving, robotic systems, and tooling. Our capabilities support subsea tieback; infield development; inspection, maintenance and repair; construction; deep ocean search & recovery; and submarine rescue.
