Scorpion Oceanics has supplied a Polyethylene Moulding System to Bridon International in association with Thales Australia on behalf of the Royal Australian Navy. The system was primarily designed for use with one particular sonar system and will enable the client to undertake cable repairs on board ship instead of having to return them to the U.K. for specialist retermination.
A modular, portable design enables the system to be moved from one location to another. A programmable control console is supplied in one carry case with a water chiller unit in another and finally the mould tool and ‘business end' in the remaining case. Interconnections for the various water pipes, electrical cables and thermocouple leads between modules are by individually identified quick release connectors. Once the chiller water hopper has been filled up all that is then required is a single electrical connection to the mains supply. The Polyethylene Moulding System is automated and will control the full process of heating and cooling cycles.
Polyethylene moulding of this type usually requires skilful manipulation of the plastic injection and heating/cooling cycles to achieve high quality mouldings and bonding to the substrate materials but by using the latest touch screen process control the process has been completely deskilled.
