Date: Friday, August 10, 2007 @ 08:00:00 EDT

Search for the USS GrunionDeep Sea Systems has joined in an effort with John, Bruce and Brad Abele to locate and positively identify the USS Grunion, a Gato-class submarine that was last heard from July 31, 1942 near the Aleutian Islands.

The Grunion, which was commanded by the Abeles' father Lt. Cmdr. Mannert L. Abele, and its crew of 70 had been listed by the Navy as "missing in action, cause unknown".

In a 2006 expedition to the Aleutians, the Abeles believe they located the sub, at a depth of one mile, using side scan sonar.

In August, the Global Explorer ROV, fitted with broadcast quality HD video cameras, will be part of an effort to positively identify the Grunion and determine the actual cause of its sinking.
