Scientists from Cawthron Institute in Nelson are using the $800,000 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), nicknamed DORA (Delaware Oceanographic Research AUV), to study the Motueka River plume as it comes into Tasman Bay. The plume, which can extend over 20 kilometres into the Bay, is known to influence water quality and growing conditions for shellfish.

BP today announced a transaction that will deliver a material exploration position in the deepwater offshore Brazil and significantly enhance its position in core strategic areas.
In a broad-ranging deal, BP will pay Devon Energy $7.0 billion in cash for assets in Brazil, Azerbaijan and the US deepwater Gulf of Mexico. These include interests in ten exploration blocks in Brazil, including seven in the prolific Campos basin; a major portfolio of deepwater exploration acreage and prospects in the US Gulf of Mexico; and an interest in the BP-operated Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) development in the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan.

In November 2007 the residents of a Mississippi mobile home park were unaware that a buried pipeline that passed close to their homes had ruptured and began to leak its contents of liquid propane, forming a deadly gas cloud.
Before all the residents could be evacuated the gas exploded killing 63 year old Maddie Mitchell, and her 20 year old granddaughter, Naquandra.

Weighing a massive 60 tons and with the dimensions of a small house, the UT-1 Ultra Trencher is now the biggest underwater robot ever made to be used for installing subsea cables for telecommunications and pipelines used in the oil industry. UT-1 Ultra Trencher is 7.8 meters long, 7.8 meters wide and 5.6 meters tall, cost 10 million UK pounds to build and may navigate through the water at speeds of 2 to 3 knots.

A project to develop an underwater observation network system that enables dense and precise monitoring of seismic and subseafloor movements has been undertaken by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), in the Kumano Basin, Kii Peninsula. The area is considered to be the active seismogenic zone of the Tonankai earthquake, a megathrust earthquake anticipated to occur along the south eastern coast of Japan within the next 30 years at a 60 to 70 percent probability.

Hydroid, Inc. A Kongsberg Company announced today that Florida Atlantic University (FAU) ordered two REMUS 100 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) systems. The two Hydroid REMUS 100 Vehicles will be operated by FAU's Institute for Ocean and Systems Engineering. They are part of FAU's National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation Program (NSF MRI) award and are intended to complement FAU's capabilities and enable research in cooperative behavior between AUVs.
